On October 14th, the Karsh Center, in collaboration with the Inner City Law Center (ICLC), the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles (WLALA), and JAMS co-presented a Housing Rights & Cultural Sensitivity in the Age of COVID-19 Training to address the ongoing and interrelated Covid-19 and housing racial justice crises. With an understanding that the deepening housing crisis demands unified efforts among organizations across Los Angeles, each group highlighted services historically and presently provided to their client communities to meet the moment, including Jody Kasten & Roya Milder, the Karsh Center’s Volunteer Legal Services Co-Chairs. The evening was moderated by Joan Kessler, ______.
One hundred and fifty participants joined this session in order to more closely understand how Covid-19 has magnified housing and racial injustices across the city. After an introduction to all of the organizations who hosted the program, Inner City Law Center led a training geared toward licensed attorneys about the law and procedure of eviction cases, national, state, and local level legislation aimed at addressing housing instability during COVID-19 and how to practice cultural sensitivity when working with clients. This curriculum was part of ICLC’s online training series, and completion of that entire nine-part training will allow for volunteer attorneys to take on pro bono housing/tenants rights cases with ICLC.
The training successfully highlighted the ways in which the participating organizations are continuing to address the heightened housing crisis and provide solutions for how we can, and must, better advocate for and invest in our communities.
