Mental health is a topic that is interconnected with each of our program areas at the Karsh Center, and we appreciate the opportunity to share more resources for supporting the mental health of individuals, families and communities as we approach the end of May, Mental Health Awareness month.
Below are just a few of many resources that our staff recommend. Whether you or a loved one are struggling with mental health challenges, you are working to break down stigmas, or you are looking in general to become more informed, we hope these resources can be a helpful starting point. We welcome your ideas and suggestions for additional resources in the comments!
Karsh Center Collaborators Focused on Mental Health
The Karsh Center works with over 35 Collaborator organizations, and we know that each of their work impacts the mental health and wellness of the community members we serve, whether it be by making sure nutritious food or childcare essentials are accessible, providing legal counsel, or so much more. The organizations below are specifically focused on mental health and wellness, and are a wonderful starting point to explore resources available to you and your loved ones.
- Southern California Counseling Center: “Mission: We change lives and strengthen communities by providing affordable mental health care to people in need. Vision: We envision and work to create empowered communities where mental health care is a right, not a privilege.”
- Amanecer: “We empower underserved kids, adults, and domestic abuse victims to overcome barriers and significant life challenges through culturally competent, comprehensive mental health, psychiatric, and case management services. In Spanish, Amanecer roughly translates to ‘New Beginning’. We use that phrase to describe the meaningful differences our clients see in their lives after treatment. Since 1975, with help from the county, foundations, and donors, we have provided hundreds of thousands of New Beginnings.”
- Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services: “Our mission is to save and transform the lives of children, adults and families through world-class, whole-person mental health care and suicide prevention, including where discrimination and injustice limit access.”
- Maternal Mental Health Now: “Maternal Mental Health NOW believes that the mental and emotional experience of welcoming a baby to the family impacts the entire family unit. We believe that addressing mental health during the perinatal (pre-conception to one year postpartum) period is as important as screening for gestational diabetes, and that a parent’s emotional well-being can have as much of an impact on the infant’s life as the nutrition that the baby receives in the womb. We work with healthcare providers, health systems, and state and local government to make the prevention, screening, and treatment of perinatal anxiety and depression part of the standard of prenatal and postpartum care for every new parent in LA County, regardless of their circumstances. We center historically oppressed, marginalized, and under-resourced parents at the heart of our work, as they regularly experience the most significant challenges to receiving timely, informed, and culturally appropriate care.”
